An update from President Charles E. Young
The faculty salary raises appropriated by the Florida Legislature will
become effective December 1, 2003. The sum of money appropriated for these
raises amounts to less than 2% and is accompanied by the following
legislative instructions for its distribution:
- Full-time faculty members with twelve-month appointments will receive a 2% salary increment or $1400, whichever is smaller, and the minimum raise for such faculty shall be $500.
- Faculty members with appointments less than twelve months will receive increases that are prorated. For example, full-time faculty members with nine-month appointments will receive a 2% salary increment or $1050, whichever is smaller, and the minimum raise for such faculty shall be $375.
- Only nine-month faculty employed on 5/1/03 and 12-month faculty employed on 6/30/03 who have received at least a satisfactory annual evaluation and have not received a letter of non-renewal are eligible for the increases provided above.
In the past, we have augmented the salary package provided by the Legislature, and we are doing so again by adding $1,000,000 to assist in funding the promotional raises for faculty and the Salary Performance Plan raises for Professors. Both of these raises became effective September 1, 2003.
I recognize that these raises do not begin to reward faculty appropriately for their many accomplishments during the past year. To provide additional support, we have distributed $2,000,000 in bonus funds to the colleges. These bonuses will be distributed based on college and department merit criteria. We would prefer that the sum was for permanent raises, but our budget is insufficient for such raises at this time.
Sincerely,

Charles E. Young
President
